Volkswagen India has officially initiated the local assembly of its upcoming flagship, the Tayron R-Line, at the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar manufacturing facility in Maharashtra. This three-row SUV is scheduled for a commercial launch in March 2026, marking the brand’s re-entry into the full-size seven-seater segment following the discontinuation of the Tiguan AllSpace in 2021.
Platform and Dimensions
While the Tayron R-Line shares its MQB EVO architecture with the five-seater Tiguan R-Line, it features a significantly altered footprint. The wheelbase has been extended by 109mm to reach 2,789mm, providing the necessary space to accommodate the additional row of seating. While it maintains a design language similar to its smaller sibling, the Tayron receives unique lighting signatures to differentiate its exterior profile.
Powertrain and Performance
Under the hood, the SUV utilizes a 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI turbo-petrol engine. This unit delivers a peak output of 204hp and 320Nm of torque. Power is managed via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which distributes drive to all four wheels through an all-wheel-drive system.
Interior Features and Technology
The cabin is headlined by a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital instrument cluster. Volkswagen has equipped the Tayron with several premium amenities aimed at the executive SUV buyer, including:
- Ventilated front-row seating with revised cushioning
- Large panoramic sunroof
- 30-colour customizable ambient lighting
- Three-zone automatic climate control
Safety and Market Positioning
The Tayron R-Line is expected to carry a comprehensive safety suite, featuring seven airbags, a 360-degree camera system, and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). It also includes a tyre-pressure monitoring system and an electronic parking brake. Positioned as a premium offering with an estimated price of approximately Rs 50 lakh, the Tayron R-Line will compete directly with the Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian, and MG Gloster.
