Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer Vinfast is reportedly preparing to introduce its VF5 model to the Indian market, positioning it as a direct competitor to popular sub-4m electric SUVs like the Tata Punch.ev and Tata Tiago.ev. The VF5, already available in global markets, is anticipated to serve as the entry point into Vinfast’s SUV lineup in India, sitting below the larger VF6 and VF7 models.

Market Positioning and Design

The Vinfast VF5 is designed as a sub-4m SUV, adhering to a design philosophy seen in its larger siblings, the VF6 and VF7. Exterior characteristics include slim LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and a connected rear lightbar, contributing to its modern appearance. The vehicle features a crossover-like stance and is expected to offer various color options. Notably, its dimensions are projected to surpass those of the Tata Punch.ev, potentially offering enhanced cabin spaciousness and practicality for occupants.

Interior Features and Connectivity

Inside, the VF5 is anticipated to offer a functional interior consistent with its expected price segment. Features based on global specifications are likely to include leatherette upholstery, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, and smartphone integration through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A 4-speaker audio system is also expected. While these features provide a solid foundation, the Vinfast VF5 may need to augment its equipment list to robustly compete with the more extensive offerings currently found in the Tata Punch.ev.

Powertrain Specifications

Globally, the Vinfast VF5 is offered with two battery pack options: a 29.6 kWh unit providing an estimated range of 268 km, and a larger 37.2 kWh pack with a claimed range of 326 km. Power outputs vary from 95 bhp to 136 bhp, dependent on the selected battery configuration. For comparison, the Tata Punch.ev is available with 25 kWh and 35 kWh battery packs, yielding comparable range figures. Specific details regarding which battery pack options will be offered in the Indian market are yet to be confirmed by Vinfast.

Expected Pricing and Market Strategy

The Tata Punch.ev currently holds the position of one of the most accessible electric SUVs in India. To establish a competitive foothold, the Vinfast VF5 is expected to adopt an aggressive pricing strategy. Initial estimates suggest a starting price of approximately Rs 13 Lakh, with the longer-range variant potentially exceeding Rs 16 Lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Beyond individual sales, the VF5 is poised to play a significant role in Vinfast’s strategy for fleet vehicles. The company is reportedly collaborating with Green and Smart Mobility (GSM) to develop an exclusive Vinfast-only taxi fleet, where the VF5 is projected to constitute a substantial portion of the fleet volume.
