Renault is preparing to re-establish its presence in the Indian mid-size SUV market with the next-generation Duster, headlined by a new 1.8-liter strong-hybrid powertrain. While turbo-petrol variants are expected to reach customers by April 2026, the flagship strong-hybrid model is officially scheduled for a market debut around Diwali 2026.
Advanced E-Tech Hybrid Powertrain
The centerpiece of the upcoming Duster is the E-Tech hybrid system, which utilizes technology derived from Renault’s Formula 1 energy management expertise. The setup features a 1,789 cc four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, codenamed HR18, developed by Horse Powertrain—a joint venture between Renault and Geely. This internal combustion unit works in tandem with two electric motors: a 49 hp traction motor and a 20 hp starter-generator. Together, the system delivers a combined output of 160 PS and 172 Nm of torque, supported by a 1.4 kWh battery pack. Renault indicates that the SUV can operate in electric mode for up to 80 percent of typical city driving cycles.
Platform and Localized Engineering
The new Duster is the first vehicle in India to utilize the Renault Group Modular Platform (RGMP). To ensure competitive positioning and suitability for regional requirements, the SUV features approximately 90 percent localization. The platform has been engineered to meet 5-star safety standards and is optimized for durability in extreme climates. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures:
- Length: 4,346 mm
- Width: 1,815 mm
- Height: 1,703 mm
- Wheelbase: 2,657 mm
- Ground Clearance: 212 mm
Interior Technology and Safety
The cabin is equipped with a 10.1-inch OpenR Link touchscreen featuring integrated Google services, alongside a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Convenience features include ventilated and powered front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a sliding center console. Safety is addressed through a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite. Furthermore, the Duster offers a significant 700 liters of boot space, positioning it as one of the more practical options in its class.
Market Positioning
By offering both high-performance turbo-petrol engines and an efficiency-focused strong-hybrid, Renault aims to compete across the diverse mid-size SUV landscape. The Duster will face direct competition from hybrid rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, as well as established internal combustion models including the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
