Kia India has confirmed that its subcompact SUV, the Sonet, has officially exceeded the 500,000-unit sales mark in the domestic market. This model has become a primary volume driver for the manufacturer, currently contributing approximately 35% of Kia’s total sales in India. The vehicle’s footprint extends beyond domestic borders, with over 100,000 units exported to 70 international markets, including Mexico, the Middle East, and various regions across the Asia-Pacific and Latin America.
Mechanical Configurations and Performance
The Sonet is positioned in the market with three distinct engine choices to meet varying consumer demands. The entry-level powertrain is a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 83hp, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. For enhanced performance, a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine is available, delivering 120hp through either a six-speed intelligent manual transmission (iMT) or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT).
The diesel offering consists of a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder unit generating 116hp. This engine provides the widest range of transmission options in the lineup, including a six-speed manual, a six-speed iMT, and a six-speed torque converter automatic. This variety allows the Sonet to compete effectively across different price brackets and performance preferences.
Feature Set and Safety Equipment
Kia has equipped the Sonet with a comprehensive array of technology and safety features designed to maintain its competitiveness in the sub-four-meter segment. High-end variants include:
- 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a matching 10.25-inch touchscreen
- Ventilated front seats and a Bose premium audio system
- Electric sunroof and a 360-degree camera system
- Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite
- Standard safety kit including six airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
- Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and Hill-start Assist
Market Pricing and Competition
The Kia Sonet is currently priced between ₹7.30 lakh and ₹14 lakh (ex-showroom). It operates in a highly saturated segment, facing direct competition from established models such as the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and the Mahindra XUV 3XO. Despite the influx of new rivals, the Sonet’s consistent sales performance highlights its sustained relevance in the Indian automotive landscape.
