JSW Motors Confirms Late 2026 Launch for Plug-in Hybrid SUV

JSW Motors Limited has announced its plans to enter the Indian passenger vehicle segment with a new SUV based on the Chery Jetour T2. Managing Director Parth Jindal confirmed that the company is targeting a launch window around October or November 2026. While JSW currently maintains a partnership with MG Motor, this new venture will operate independently through a collaboration with China-based Chery Automobiles.

Powertrain and Platform Details

Departing from the traditional ladder-frame construction common in the rugged SUV segment, the upcoming model will utilize a monocoque chassis. The powertrain strategy focuses on electrification, featuring a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine integrated with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology. The vehicle is expected to include a four-wheel-drive (4WD) system to support its off-road positioning.

Design and Dimensions

The SUV measures approximately 4.7 meters in length, placing it in the same size category as the Toyota Fortuner. Its design language adopts a boxy, utilitarian aesthetic characterized by an upright stance, flared wheel arches, and a tailgate-mounted spare tire. Despite its size, the vehicle is intended to compete in the mid-size to premium SUV space with both five- and seven-seater configurations likely to be offered.

Interior Technology and Features

The Indian-spec model is expected to mirror the high equipment levels found in the global Jetour T2. Key features include:

  • 15.6-inch central infotainment touchscreen
  • 10.25-inch digital driver display
  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
  • 360-degree parking camera network
  • Power-adjustable ventilated front seats
  • Panoramic sunroof and electric tailgate

Manufacturing Strategy and Market Positioning

JSW intends to follow a phased localization strategy. Initial production will rely heavily on imported components, but the company aims to transition to high domestic content over time. While battery cells and related electronics will continue to be sourced from China, other major components are slated for Indian production to manage costs. JSW aims to position the vehicle within the Rs 15 lakh to Rs 30 lakh price bracket, placing it in direct competition with the Mahindra Scorpio-N, XUV700, and Tata Safari.
