Hyundai has officially ceased fresh orders for the i10 city car in Europe and the United Kingdom, marking a strategic shift toward an all-electric future in these regions. The decision comes as automotive manufacturers face increasing costs to align internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles with tightening emission regulations. Production of the i10 at Hyundai’s Turkish facility will conclude to allow for a comprehensive plant upgrade dedicated to an upcoming electric vehicle (EV). The Transition to Electrification
With the i10’s departure, the Inster EV now serves as the most accessible entry point into the Hyundai lineup for UK buyers. This shift highlights a significant change in the brand’s pricing structure for the entry-level segment. While the outgoing i10 was priced at Rs18,350, the Inster EV carries a starting price of Rs23,850, representing a Rs5,500 increase. Hyundai has indicated that there are currently no plans for a direct ICE-powered successor to the i10 in the European market.
Market Legacy and Competition
Since its introduction in 2008, the i10 has been a consistent performer for Hyundai, with cumulative UK sales exceeding 370,000 units. Its exit leaves a narrowing field of traditional budget hatchbacks. Buyers seeking internal combustion alternatives in this segment are now limited to a few options:
- Kia Picanto: Currently available starting at £16,745 on-road.
- Toyota Aygo X: Now utilizes hybrid technology, moving it into a higher price bracket.
- Fiat 500: Has transitioned to hybrid and electric powertrains.
Regional Divergence: The i10 in India
In contrast to the European market, the i10 remains a critical component of Hyundai’s strategy in India, where it is sold as the Grand i10 Nios. The model recently reached a global milestone of 3.3 million cumulative sales, with the Indian domestic market accounting for over 2 million of those units. It currently ranks as Hyundai’s fifth best-selling vehicle in India, contributing nearly 10% of the brand’s monthly volume.
Grand i10 Nios Specifications (Indian Market)
The Indian-spec model continues to offer a variety of powertrain options tailored to local demand:
- Petrol Engine: 1.2-litre unit producing 83 PS and 113.8 Nm of torque.
- Transmission: Choice of a 5-speed manual or a Smart Auto AMT.
- CNG Option: Bi-fuel variant delivering 69 PS and 95.2 Nm, paired with a 5-speed manual.
- Pricing: Starting at Rs 5.55 lakh (ex-showroom).
While the i10 continues to see strong demand in emerging markets, its discontinuation in Europe underscores the accelerating move toward full electrification in developed automotive sectors.
