JSW Group is set to expand its footprint in the Indian automotive sector as an independent manufacturer, moving beyond its existing partnership with MG Motor. Managing Director Parth Jindal recently detailed the company’s upcoming product pipeline, which begins with a premium plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV scheduled for a September 2026 launch. Backed by a Rs 14,000 crore investment in a new facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the brand aims to introduce high levels of localization to remain competitive in the Rs 15 lakh to Rs 30 lakh price segment.
Production Timeline and Localization Strategy
The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant is currently under development, with the general assembly line expected to be operational by June 2026. JSW plans to begin vehicle assembly in August 2026 using imported kits, transitioning to 80% localization by October 2026. Key localized elements will include:
- Battery packs and electric motors
- Body-in-white (BIW) steel components
- Interior seating and glass
- Tyres and rubber components
While most hardware will be sourced domestically, the company will continue to import battery cells and specialized technology from China.
Product Details and Market Positioning
The inaugural model is expected to be based on the Jetour T2 SUV, specifically utilizing the i-DM plug-in hybrid system. This powertrain will represent the first PHEV offering in India priced under Rs 30 lakh. The vehicle features a monocoque construction with a rugged, boxy design language. While global versions offer both 5-seater and 7-seater configurations, JSW has not yet confirmed the specific dimensions for the Indian market.
Future Roadmap
Following the initial SUV launch, JSW plans to introduce a second vehicle in January 2027. This follow-up model is projected to sit in the Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh price range, further solidifying the brand’s presence in the mid-size SUV segment. The company is also evaluating drivetrain options, though it remains unconfirmed if the initial PHEV will offer four-wheel-drive capabilities.
