Tata Motors is evaluating the introduction of a diesel engine option for its popular Punch sub-4m SUV, a decision that would be primarily guided by consumer demand and market feedback. This was confirmed by Mohan Savarkar, Chief Product Officer at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, following the recent launch of the Punch facelift, which also saw the debut of a new turbo petrol engine.
Diesel Engine Feasibility and Market Context
Mr. Savarkar indicated that while a diesel engine for the Punch is a possibility, its implementation hinges on market interest. From a technical standpoint, the Punch shares its ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) architecture with the Tata Altroz, which is currently the only diesel-powered hatchback in India. This common platform suggests that integrating the 1.5L Revotorq diesel engine into the Punch would not pose a significant engineering challenge.
However, the compact SUV segment currently demonstrates a preference for petrol and CNG powertrains. Data from Tata Motors’ existing portfolio highlights this trend, with diesel variants accounting for approximately 16% of Nexon sales and about 8% of Altroz sales. Despite the current market preference, the concept of a diesel engine in this segment is not without precedent, with previous offerings like the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Honda WR-V, and Hyundai i20 Active having included diesel options.
Evolution of Punch Powertrains
The Tata Punch has seen a steady expansion of its powertrain offerings since its initial launch with a 1.2L three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. The model range has progressively grown to include i-CNG variants and an all-electric Punch EV. The recently updated 2026 Punch facelift introduced a 120 PS turbo petrol engine, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, aiming to broaden its market appeal. Tata Motors also states that a DCA (dual-clutch automatic) gearbox option for the Punch i-Turbo is under consideration, further underscoring the company’s flexible, multi-powertrain strategy responsive to customer preferences.
