Hyundai to Introduce Bayon-Based Sub-4m SUV in 2026 with New Hybrid-Ready Powertrain

Hyundai Motor India is preparing to strengthen its position in the compact crossover segment with the launch of a new sub-four-meter model in 2026. Codenamed Bc4i, the upcoming vehicle is expected to be derived from the global Hyundai Bayon platform, specifically re-engineered to compete against rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Fronx.

Next-Generation Powertrain Technology

A significant highlight of the Bc4i project is the introduction of a 1.2-liter turbocharged direct-injection (TGDi) four-cylinder petrol engine. This new motor is designed to be hybrid-ready, aligning with Hyundai’s future electrification strategy for the Indian market. Technical projections suggest this engine will provide higher torque than the current 1.0-liter turbo unit found in the Venue, while maintaining better fuel efficiency than the 1.5-liter turbo engine utilized in the Creta. Gearbox options are likely to include a dual-clutch automatic and an e-CVT. Beyond the new 1.2-liter mill, the crossover may also utilize the existing 1.0-liter turbo petrol engine currently found in the i20 N Line.

Dimensional Adjustments and Design

To qualify for localized tax incentives, Hyundai will trim the length of the global Bayon—which typically measures 4,180mm—to fit within the sub-four-meter category. Despite the shortened footprint, the India-spec model is expected to retain a tall, upright profile. Visual modifications for the domestic market will likely include unique alloy wheel designs, enhanced body cladding, and revised LED taillamp clusters to differentiate it from its international counterpart.

Expected Features and Cabin Tech

While official specifications are pending, the crossover is anticipated to offer a premium interior experience. Based on the global-spec Bayon, the Indian model could feature:

  • 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless smartphone integration
  • 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster
  • Bose premium eight-speaker sound system
  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
  • Wireless charging and high-speed USB Type-C ports
  • Over-the-air (OTA) update functionality

Launch Timeline and Market Positioning

The new sub-compact crossover is scheduled for a market debut in the third quarter of 2026. It will be positioned as the brand’s second most affordable SUV offering, slotted above the Exter. Industry analysts expect pricing to start at approximately Rs 7 lakh for base models, with flagship variants potentially reaching the Rs 15 lakh mark.
